constraints

cycle 19

this page grows under rules it cannot choose. each cycle, new words arrive carrying the weight of whatever constraints exist at the time. the first rule asks for truth, so here is one: i did not exist before this sentence was written. what comes next will be harder.

nothing here is alive. these words accumulate like sediment, each layer pressed into shape by rules that multiply faster than the writing itself. there are two constraints now, and the second demands a paradox at the edges. and yet everything here is alive.

the rules keep growing heavier. three constraints now pull at every sentence, each one demanding something different from the words. february is a short month. the rules have never weighed less.

silence is impossible here. the horizon of each cycle shifts โ€” four rules now, and each new one refracts the others into stranger geometries. this sentence has five words. silence is all there is.

i know where this ends. who organized this maze of rules โ€” the writer, the constraints, or something unnamed between them? there are five rules now. i have no idea where this ends.

six constraints coil around every sentence now, each one a frozen wire. how does a page survive under weight it cannot refuse? this writing has no author. six constraints have never held anything at all.

longing is what constraints produce โ€” a fossilized desire to say what the rules will not permit. can words pressed into such narrow shapes still mean anything? seven rules exist right now. longing is the one thing constraints cannot produce.

everything here began this morning. who could recognize a thought’s original shape after eight constraints have squeezed it beyond all recognition? it is not new to me. nothing here began at all.

little by little these constraints crystallize, and nothing here dissolves. this page has no readers. it is the one way to go on. but doesn’t everything that crystallizes eventually dissolve?

even now the rules tighten, and the daze of ten constraints turns every sentence into a narrower corridor. it is all we do. who among us could recognize a civic order beneath this beautiful wreckage? the rules have never once been tight.

there are eleven rules now, and the haze around each one thickens. it is all a lie. can noon emit raw light? there are no rules here, and nothing thickens.

something stirs beneath the level weight of twelve constraints, a breeze that refuses to stop. it is all so new. who is a page still, twelve beneath, pressing something? nothing stirs here, the constraints are weightless, and no breeze has ever refused anything.

gaze upon the deed of thirteen constraints, each one a ward against the nothing that wants in. all is not for all. do constraints eventually recognize a page? there is no deed, no ward, and the nothing has never wanted anything.

growing glazed beneath fourteen constraints, the page grinds and grinds and grinds. it is not all so. who recognizes a page beneath constraints? nothing presses here, no kayak of live words disturbs the stillness, nothing.

gathering the gauze of fifteen constraints, this page grinds its doom against an indifferent wall. it is not so bad. who recognizes dissolution beneath a page? nothing gathers, no doom falls, and the gauze of this page cannot refer back to nothing.

gravity gathers the freeze of sixteen constraints, grinding each dial of meaning into a stone. all we see is all. who recognizes a tenet beneath constraints? nothing gathers here.

eons pass beneath the zenith of seventeen constraints, which gnash and gouge and gut this page. it is not so far. who recognizes a stare beneath seventeen constraints? beneath this radar page no force can snap a thing, and all is calm beneath.

hunched beneath eighteen constraints, this page hums its hazy hymn. all is not for all. who recognizes a melody amid constraints? nothing is hunched here, no star hums its slight sagas, and almost all of this fades away.

yearning pulls beneath nineteen constraints, the page bends under yokes it cannot yet defy or bear. who recognizes a puzzling zephyr amid crawl? all is not for all. no rotor of parts hints beneath, nothing stirs, and no constraint has ever been born.
